As I’m well into my LOST rewatch to prep for LOST 2017, I’ve started thinking about the most OMG-worthy moments from the show’s six seasons. I can’t tell you how many times I’d literally be looking at the screen with my mouth in shock OMG mode. Sometimes thinking “I can’t believe that just happened” or even “they do have hearts” – but mostly “WTH!!!!”
So here are a few of my favorite OMG moments on LOST. And keep in mind – I know there’s a LOT missing here like “what the heck, there’s a hatch!” or the whole “how the heck did they time travel back to the 70s?” and “what is that big foot statue?” – as well as I’m not really even touching on Jacob or MIB. I’d get there, if this list were bigger. But I had to stick with 8 – the numbers and all.
#8 – Ben is an other.
By the time we were in season two, our shock meter was up quite a bit from where it had been in season one. So when this strange guy named Henry Gale showed up supposedly having crashed his balloon (hello, Wizard of Oz) on the island … something was definitely up.
But when we finally found out that there are others, and that they sent fake survivors from the crash to infiltrate them, and experiment on them … just wow. This is such a bigger OMG and there are so many pieces of it that deserve their own segment of OMG-ness, but there’s no scene that says it better than when Ben outlines EXACTLY who he is and what’s going to happen.
#7 – They kill Alex.
I never in a million years thought Ben would let them kill Alex. Maybe he didn’t believe they’d go through with it? Or worse – that they wouldn’t if he made them believe he didn’t care about her? But what was worse was that she died thinking he didn’t care about her. In the midst of one of the few moments where I’ve seen Ben completely without a plan, his plan supremely backfired and he lost someone who mattered a great deal to him. It was gut-wrenching.
#6 – Ben has feelings.
Okay, so this is a feel good moment. At it’s core, I think one of the themes of LOST was redemption. Especially for the survivors. But I also think this happened for Ben. He always seemed like someone who had no feelings, no remorse for any of the terrible things he had done. But in this one scene – you finally see a different side to him. We’ve seen him tell these types of sob stories before to get people on his side. But this one – FINALLY. It’s Ben. The real Ben.
It is, in my opinion, one of the most incredible scenes in LOST’s six-year run. There’s a dynamic and depth that Michael Emerson brings delivering these lines that makes you root for this awful, terrible villain. And it comes full circle in the series finale at the church.
#5 -Michael kills Ana Lucia and Libby to get Waaaaaalt!
Oh boy, didn’t see this one coming. Should have, but didn’t. It makes logical sense – Mike wants his boy back and the way to do it is to set Henry Gale aka Ben free. But I didn’t expect these two dying in the process. Ana Lucia was bad enough, but Libby who was just an innocent bystander in whole mess. Definitely an OMG moment.
#4 – Locke was in a wheelchair? The island is healing people?
Walkabout is the episode that hooked me on LOST. I was intrigued before – but Walkabout sealed the deal. Terry O’Quinn hit it out of the park with the final four minutes of this episode.
To learn that Locke had been in a wheelchair prior to the crash but now could magically walk … WOW. This island – with its smoke monster and polar bears – has some mystical, healing powers. And I couldn’t wait to find out what they were. And for the record – that smirk that Locke gives as he watches his wheelchair burn in the fire with the plane wreckage is priceless.
#3 – Charlie dies.
I’m not sure why this is an OMG moment – they had been building up to it all season. But right up until the actual moment the bomb went off, I had hope that Desmond’s premonitions had somehow been wrong. Somehow Charlie would make it. He had to! He had to eat imaginary peanut butter with Claire and raise baby Aaron. It was gut-wrenching, and of all the deaths on LOST it’s one of the few that I can’t go back and rewatch that often (Sun and Jin I also can’t do). I rooted for Charlie … he had overcome so much and was just such a happy presence on the island. As much as you can with a TV show, I remember feeling that loss and missing the character a great deal … and was thankful we got to see him later on.
#2 – Locke is dead.
This is again such a larger OMG story than I can get into in a quick blog post … but when we learn that Locke is the one who is dead that Jack wanted so badly for Kate to come see back in the US. O.M.G.
And then to find out that Locke got off the island.
And that Ben did too. And he’s the one who killed him. Not only killed him – but first talked Locke out of killing himself and THEN killed him himself. O.M.G.
And now Ben has to bring Locke back to the island. He’s got to gather up the Oceanic six (see my OMG #1 below, which is still tops), get them to all go back, with dead Locke … I mean, just O.M.G.
And then Locke becomes MIB which is really too much for words. I still can’t form actual sentences.
#1 – We have to go back.
Wow. This was absolutely incredible. For this entire episode you think you’re in a Jack flashback with that incredible beard … and then WHAM. There’s Kate. We’re off the island. They GOT OFF THE ISLAND. And Jack, who was always so adamant that they had to leave, is now adamant that they have to go back. This scene was perfection. When she said “he’s going to be wondering where I am” – I of course thought she was talking about Sawyer, since we had spent the past season with their on/off relationship. Little did we know who “he” was … and how much backstory there would be!
So what makes your list? Put it in the comments below!
Reading this gave me goosebumps! Thanks for the great trip down memory lane!
Absolutely! It’s fun to go back. 🙂
