Can you believe that in just a little over 100 days we’ll be back on the island? Or for those joining us for the first time – you’ll be heading to that magical place where LOST filmed for six seasons? I have to tell you, the LOST connection is incredible. But the island of Oahu has some incredible magic all its own. After flying over the ocean for what seems like hours … to finally see this beautiful island below you. That island … it’s breathtaking.
If you’re heading to LOST 2017, you may be wondering what should make your travel pack list. It came up on our Facebook group the other day and it’s a great question!
Here’s my list of must-have’s – in no particular order.
#1 – Your Giacchino Soundtrack / LOST DVDs
One of the coolest things for me was flying from LAX into Honolulu and listening to LAX by Giacchino while I was landing. It was emotional and I definitely got a little misty eyed.
Also, if you’re bringing your laptop or have the episodes via iTunes – watch some LOST on the plane. It’s a great way to get caught up (again) before you land on the island.
#2 – Your LOST-Themed Costume
You haven’t started working on your costume yet?! Get working! 🙂 We had some incredibly creative costumes at LOST 2014 and I suspect this year will only up the bar. Seriously – someone was the entire island. And another person was this awesome mixture of Bad Robot and Crazy Claire.
Some of your materials you can get on the island, if you don’t want to pack them in your luggage. Just plan ahead.
#3 – Your LOST 2017 Tee / Other LOST Gear
Unfortunately I’m not able to ship LOST 2017 gear to Hawaii for you to purchase on-site as shipping off the mainland is incredibly expensive. Plus, I’d never be able to guess how many of each size I need to have on hand.
However, if you want to wear LOST 2017 gear at the event, you can purchase it in advance from our Café Press store. Just click here. We have some other goodies in there too – mugs, bags, etc.
Also – we pretty much spend the entire event decked out in LOST gear. T-shirts, rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets from various events … if you have it – bring it! It’s really cool seeing all the various LOST gear that people have.
#4 – An Item for the Cast to Sign
Some people have a “master” they’ve been getting signed by the entire cast over the years – maybe a poster or the cover of the LOST encyclopedia. We’ll also have LOST 2017 posters there for you if you don’t want to bring something on the flight with you. But be sure when you come to the Q&A that you have something ready for them to sign. It’s a must-have souvenir to take home. And don’t worry about the sharpies – we have you covered. Unless you want the signature in a unique color that isn’t silver, gold or black.
#5 – Your List of LOST Must-See Locations
We see a lot of them on the filming location tours, but we don’t see them all. And some are really just due to where the buses we are in can go. For example, the road Locke’s dad’s house is on is the same road where they filmed the opening/closing shot of the series (with Jack in the bamboo forest). As we were going down the road, the tour guide said “and over to your left is where they shot the infamous opening and closing shots!” and I’ve never wanted to jump off a bus so badly!
So be sure to make your list of locations you want to see while you’re on the island.
#6 – Clothing This or That
When we were in Hawaii in late September, 2014 – I thought the weather was going to be relatively mild. I was in for a shock. The humidity was off the charts and even the locals were a bit surprised by it. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue, but everything in Hawaii is open air. Meaning our hotel (and most, if not all hotels) have open air lobbies.
Hopefully the humidity won’t be quite so bad this time around – fingers crossed! But keep in mind that in October, the average high is 87 °F and the low is 73 °F.
Most attendees wore t-shirts (especially LOST-themed ones) and shorts.
#7 – Your Camera with Lots of Memory Cards
You will be taking lots and lots of pictures. Be sure to bring extra memory cards so you don’t run out of space.
#8 – Room in Your Phone
You’re going to be heading home with memories and new LOSTie friends. I truly mean it when I say that the LOST community is like no other fandom out there. Whether we see each other often because we live near each other, once a year, or once every few years – this community is close-knit. Even if you’re coming to LOST 2017 solo, not knowing anyone (and I know a few of you are) … you’re really not going alone. You already have friends waiting for you on the island.
So when I say make room in your phone – I mean for the photos and the contacts you’ll be adding.
BONUS – Save Some Money for the Charity Auction
If you follow Cancer Gets LOST on Twitter or Facebook, you seen a sneak peek of some of the goodies they are bringing to Hawaii for the on-site charity auction at Dharmaville. I can’t wait for this auction – to not only be able to bid on some incredible LOST memorabilia but to also help out a great cause. The auction in 2014 was incredible, raising over $11k in just 2 hours.
This year to be holding it at such a cool and iconic LOST location like Dharmaville? Dude (as Jo and Hurley would say) …. sweet.
For those who have been to Hawaii and/or LOST 2014 – what would you add to this list?
